Sherri got her first professional break at the age of seventeen when she was cast as The Girl in an off Broadway production of The Fantasticks. She was in the original Broadway production of Look to the Lilies and has performed at The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Kansas City Starlight Theatre. Her musical theatre credits include Carousel, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls, She Loves Me, Flower Drum Song and The King and I. As a recording artist for RCA, she recorded Sweet Talkin’ Guy.
As a jazz singer, Sherri took part in the International workshop, Jazz in July, where she performed with Sheila Jordan and Billy Taylor. She has also appeared at the Pittsfield Jazz Festival and her jazz group, the Sherri James Buxton Trio, was the main attraction in the Cranwell Resort’s Music Room supper club for several years.
In the Berkshires, Sherri has also performed at The Colonial Theatre, Mission Bar and Tapas, Castle Street Café, Becket Arts Center and on the Smile with B-Mile TV show. She is on the voice faculty at the Berkshire Music School where she teaches the very successful Adult Cabaret Workshops. Sherri directs the musical group Cabaret to Go and has appeared with them. at The Colonial Theatre, Arrowhead, The Clark Art Museum, Berkshire Museum and The Norman Rockwell Museum.
She is also a music specialist in the Central Berkshire Regional School District and is on the Colonial Theatre Education Committee.
Sherri has a BME in music from Indiana University and a Med from Cambridge College.
Her article, “Look What These Kids Can Do: Teaching Music to Children with Autism” was published in the summer edition of Massachusetts Music News.
